Exfoliation: The Key to a Youthful Glow

Do you know why our skin seems to be more dull and rough, more often as we age? This is due to the slowing of a natural process called Cell Turnover, or Desquamation. In this process, a new cell is created in the deepest layer of the epidermis, and as it rises to the surface, it pushes away the rough, dead skin cells. Babies Cell Turnover Rate is, on average, 14 days compared to about 28-40 for adults! No wonder they have such soft, radiant skin! This process can be even more difficult for those with acne prone skin and the skin tends to create even more dead skin cells and want to hold on to them. So the answer for every one, no matter your skin type, is exfoliation!

There are three types of exfoliation: Manual, Chemical, & Enzymatic. Each break down dead skin cells in different ways to reveal, softer, smoother, younger looking skin.

Manual Exfoliation is done manually. Meaning, you use your fingers to work a “gritty” exfoliant into the skin to break up and remove dead skin cells. This grit can be made with ingredients like rice powder, crushed almonds or olive seeds. One of our all-time favorite manual exfoliants for all skin types? Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant

Chemical Exfoliation utilizes alpha-hydroxy acids(AHA) and beta-hydroxy acids(BHA) to loosen and remove those skin cells without physically manipulating the skin.

Enzymatic Exfoliation digests the proteins that bind cells together, breaking down dead cells for removal and purifying the pores. Common enzymes are Papain from papaya and Bromelain from pineapple.

Chemical Exfoliants and Enzymatic Exfoliants are often combined in professional peels to get a deeper, more intensive treatment for instantly glowing results. For example, the Eminence Organics Blueberry Detox Firming Peel
